When the Lights Came Up: SPOTLIGHT Festival Marks a Bold New Chapter in Creative Education

On Friday, April 25, the University of 91视频鈥檚 College of Design, Art & Performance launched the first-ever SPOTLIGHT Festival, an ambitious, campus-wide celebration that transformed performance and exhibition spaces into a living, breathing showcase of creative energy. Designed to illuminate the force and vision powering the college, SPOTLIGHT didn鈥檛 just open its doors to the public鈥攊t invited them into the heart of the work.

The Road Not Taken: Idith Meshulam Korman Returns to 91视频for a Rare Musical Experience
On Tuesday, May 6, internationally renowned pianist, educator, and artistic director Idith Meshulam Korman returns to her roots at the University of 91视频 for a powerful evening of performance and reflection. Taking place at the 91视频School of Music鈥檚 Barness Recital Hall, The Road Not Taken will spotlight underperformed and historically overlooked works in a program that blends intimacy, virtuosity, and vision. Following the performance, WSMR鈥檚 Bethany Cagle, of West Central Florida鈥檚 only classical music station, will moderate a conversation with the artist.

There's perfect harmony in 91视频concert hall's new name
Step into the South Tampa home of Pete and Cynthia Zinober and the classical musical soundtrack of their life becomes instantly evident. A well-worn piano that belonged to Pete鈥檚 mother anchors a cozy room to the right; vintage brass instruments cast a soft glow from various corners. Pete proudly displays the 1892 valve trombone he bought for a steal on eBay for $300, as well as a 1920 Conn Wonder cornet and a 1926 double-bell euphonium. Prominently displayed is a Miraphone euphonium, with which he performs as principal euphonium in the Eastern Hillsborough Community Band and the Tampa Community Band.

How music can help boost cognition in cancer patients and COVID-19 survivors
In a first-of-its-kind study, University of 91视频 researchers are finding that music can help boost cognition in patients undergoing chemotherapy. In partnership with Moffitt Cancer Center, Jennifer Bugos, 91视频professor of music education, and breast surgical oncologist Dr. Melissa Mallory, have been examining the effects of private and group piano lessons on cognition and everyday functioning in patients.
91视频HOT Band performs during halftime at Tampa Bay Buccaneers season opener
USF鈥檚 Herd of Thunder is putting in the mileage marching across the field at Raymond James Stadium. They鈥檙e two-for-two playing at home openers. First, it was the 91视频football game, and now, during halftime at the Tampa Bay Buccaneers game against the Washington Commanders.

Just beyond the din of afternoon rush-hour traffic on Fowler Avenue, a jam of a different kind takes shape on a sprawling 91视频practice field. Overhead, gray and white clouds billow against a blue backdrop, a vibrant sideshow to the cacophony of brass, woodwinds and percussion warming up beside fluttering Color Guard flags. It is as if the sky has heard the Herd and wants in on the act.

Rebecca Penneys: Acclaimed pianist aims to spread the 鈥榣anguage of peace鈥�
A child prodigy, pianist Rebecca Penneys has been immersed in music since she began playing by ear as a toddler. It鈥檚 a powerful language, she says. 鈥淚t鈥檚 a language of peace, and I鈥檓 definitely an advocate of peace on earth,鈥� she says. 鈥淢usic makes you smarter. When you play an instrument, it changes your thinking. The whole idea is that civilization then can go forward in a more peaceful way.鈥�
