Graduate

Due to the generosity of various donors, each year the University of 91视频 Department of English makes available a number of scholarships and awards to recognize outstanding teaching and scholarly work among our graduate students. Recipients are recognized at the annual Celebration of Awards and Achievements near the end of spring term.

Eligibility

Following the wishes of our generous donors, the scholarships listed below are restricted to students whose home campus is designated as the 91视频Tampa campus. Please note that these awards are scholarships, awarded on the basis of merit.

Deadlines

AwardSpring Scholarships & Awards: The application period begins when the AwardSpring portal opens in December every Academic Year. The deadline to submit will be listed in AwardSpring for each Scholarship or Award. See here for updates: Office of Financial Aid - Scholarships

Department Paper Copy Scholarships & Awards: These scholarships and awards are not a part of the AwardSpring database and instead will be sent out as paper copies at the beginning of the Fall semester to be submitted over email and will have different due dates than those of AwardSpring. 

Distribution of Awards

The scholarships listed below are non-taxable, and will be processed and paid to each winner鈥檚 Student Self-Service account through the Office of Financial Aid.

Award Eligibility and Selection Criteria

Ed & Ann Hirshberg Award for Excellence in Creative Writing

Undergraduate or Graduate students in the Creative Writing Program

Estelle J. Zbar Endowed Poetry Prize

Annual award to full or part-time students at all academic levels studying Poetry in the College of Arts & Sciences on the Tampa campus.

Joseph G. Bentley Memorial Scholarship in English

Undergraduate or Graduate students majoring in English

James and Lorraine Parrish Endowed Memorial Scholarship

Undergraduate or Graduate students majoring in English

Irving H. Rubin Endowed Memorial Scholarship in English

Eligible: Master's or doctoral students in all areas (Full or Part-Time).

Criteria (not all required and not in priority order):

  • Overall GPA
  • Scholarly production (papers, conference presentations, etc.)
  • Service to department (not necessarily teaching)
  • Service to the profession

Carolyn L. Cooley Graduate Award in American Literature

Eligible: Doctoral students in Literature (Full or Part-Time).

Criteria (not in priority order):

  • Prospectus (if available)
  • One writing sample (in addition to prospectus)
  • Scholarly record (GPA, publications, conference papers)
  • 3.5 GPA

Jack B. Moore Memorial Endowed Scholarship

Eligible: Master's or doctoral students (Full or Part-Time).

Criteria (not in priority order): 

  • Work in American literature, with emphasis on American culture (published or unpublished)
  • 3.0 GPA

Irving Deer Memorial Endowed Scholarship

 Eligible: Master's or doctoral students in Literature (Full or Part-Time).

Criteria:

  • Theoretically-informed work in literature, film, or cultural studies (published or unpublished) 
  • 3.0 GPA 

John and Dorothy Iorio Scholarship for Outstanding Graduate Student

Eligible: Master's or doctoral students in Literature (Full Time); must be a Florida Resident

Criteria:

  • Outstanding academic record
  • Leadership
  • 3.0 GPA
  • Leadership positions will be a consideration of the award

Anspaugh Endowed Fiction Writers Award in English

Eligible: All 91视频Students (Tampa Campus)

  • The work submitted must be previously unpublished prose fiction.
  • Maximum length per entry: 5,000 words.
  • Each contestant may submit one entry.
  • Contestants must follow the submission guidelines above and title their files 鈥淎nspaugh-[Title]鈥.

Anspaugh Endowed Science Fiction Award in English

Eligible: All 91视频Students (Tampa Campus)

  • The work submitted must be previously unpublished prose fiction.
  • Maximum length per entry: 5,000 words.
  • A contestant may submit one entry only.
  • Contestants must follow the submission guidelines above and title their files 鈥淎nspaugh SciFi-[Title]鈥.
  • For this contest, science fiction will be considered as springing from a limited number of arbitrary hypotheses relating to the hard or soft sciences, along with realistic development of their implications.
  • Fantasies (examples being Watership Down and the Tolkien stories) are excluded from consideration.
  • NOTE: If no science fiction entry is deemed worthy of a prize by the judges, then no science fiction award will be given.

Award Eligibility and Selection Criteria

Alice Hearne Memorial Scholarship in English

Eligible: Doctoral candidates in Literature or R/C (Full or Part-Time).

Criteria (not in priority order):

  • Performance on the PhD qualifying component
  • Doctoral GPA
  • Scholarly production
  • Quality of dissertation prospectus (approved prospectus preferred)

Dorothy and Esther Newman Graduate Award

Eligible: Master's or doctoral students (Full or Part-Time).

Criteria:

  • Work in 19th Century British Literature
  • Preference for full-time student(s)
  • 3.0 GPA

Harry and Julian Newman Archival Research Award

Eligible: Doctoral candidates.

Criteria:

  • Archival research required
  • Strong preference to students working in British literature
  • Quality of research proposal

Estelle J. Zbar Scholarship for Teaching Assistant Award

Master's students only: teacher of freshman composition within academic year selected

Bettye Newman Poetry Award

Eligible: All 91视频Students (Tampa Campus)

Must submit a portfolio of four previously unpublished poems

How to Apply

Scholarships (which are not taxable) will be disbursed as part of the winners鈥 financial aid packages by the Office of Student Financial Aid. 

All eligible students who wish to be considered for a scholarship or award must submit an application through the 91视频AwardSpring portal found here. Scholarships & Awards administered outside of AwardSpring will have its own deadline and application process that will be communicated by the department through email.
