Tree cutting

Working near power lines? Don't risk it.

Landscape workers often face serious electrical hazards when performing routine tasks near overhead power lines. While line-clearance tree trimming is governed by OSHA standard , many landscaping and horticultural operations fall outside this scope but still involve proximity to energized lines.

So, which OSHA standard applies when the work isn鈥檛 directly related to electric power generation, transmission, or distribution? That鈥檚 where OSHA standard comes in鈥攊t outlines safety requirements for working near overhead power lines in general industry settings.

Know the Limits: Safe Distances from Power Lines

Before any work begins, conduct a thorough site assessment to identify the presence of overhead lines and determine appropriate safety measures. If the lines are energized and unguarded, OSHA mandates the following minimum approach distances for unqualified workers:

  • 10 feet for voltages to ground 50kV or below
  • For voltages above 50kV, the minimum distance increases by 4 inches for every additional 10kV

These distances apply whether the worker is on the ground or elevated.

Training Saves Lives

Workers must be trained to recognize electrical hazards in their environment. A palm frond or tree branch can easily make contact with a line during trimming. Walking with a pole saw or ladder too close to a line can also be dangerous. These seemingly minor oversights have led to serious injuries and fatalities.

In fiscal year 2024, OSHA conducted 64 inspections in Florida鈥檚 landscaping sector, 15 of which were following fatal incidents. Alarmingly, one-third of these fatalities were linked to contact with overhead power lines.
