U.S. News & World Report has just released its annual rankings of the nation鈥檚 best hospitals, and once again, Tampa General Hospital, primary teaching partner of the 91视频Health Morsani College of Medicine, has excelled in the rankings.
Six TGH specialties placed among the top 50 in the U.S., with another five TGH specialties ranked as 鈥渉igh performing鈥� and among the top 10 percent in the nation. You can read more about TGH鈥檚 rankings here.
I want to congratulate our faculty at TGH on their ongoing commitment to high-quality, compassionate care. Indeed, all specialties achieving top marks were led or co-led by our faculty physician leaders.
TGH鈥檚 excellent performance, together with the 91视频Health Morsani College of Medicine鈥檚 recent ranking as the top research-intensive medical school in Florida, top 16 in the nation, showcase how our strong partnership continues to help both institutions. That, in turn, benefits Florida by improving the lives and health of Floridians.
But the high rankings speak to something else as well: how academic medicine elevates health care. Scan through the overall U.S. News rankings, and you鈥檒l see that many of the high-ranking hospitals are also academic medical centers.
Patients benefit by receiving care at academic medical centers. Studies show that the sickest patients have up to a when treated at academic medical centers. All of the nation鈥檚 are at academic medical centers, as are 64 percent of the .
costly services that require high levels of physician expertise and complex multi-disciplinary care, such as trauma centers, burn centers and inpatient psychiatric services. They are more likely to be safety net hospitals, providing care to those who otherwise couldn鈥檛 afford it.
In other words, it鈥檚 not an accident that Tampa Bay鈥檚 best hospital is also, in partnership with the Morsani College of Medicine, the state鈥檚 top research-intensive medical school, form the region鈥檚 leading academic health system.
And we鈥檙e dedicated to working together to improve the health of our fellow Floridians.
